IDEA (Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) Voter Turnout website contains the most comprehensive global collection of political participation statistics available. The project is based on the assumption that participation, whether through the institutions of civil society, political parties, or the act of voting, is increasingly being seen as an essential prerequisite of any stable democracy. Analyzing the state of democracy around the world, IDEA has thus chosen to focus on one dimension of political participation – voter turnout. . The figures for national presidential and parliamentary elections since 1945 are presented country by country, using both the number of registered voters and voting age population as indicators. Also available are the most recent indicators of literacy and human development, as well as other data and material. As a project managed by IDEA with a global scope, this database is completely free of charge and provides users with a good amount of retrievable material, mostly charts and statistics diplayed directly on screen, while many available IDEA publications can also be requested free of charge.
